Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery is a surgical procedure performed under general or local anesthesia. During this operation, excess fat, connective tissue, glandular tissue, and skin from the breast are removed through surgical methods. If necessary, techniques like liposuction may be employed to remove excess fat tissue specifically. The removal of tissues is typically done through incisions beneath the skin, and these incisions are strategically placed to minimize future scarring, providing room for cosmetic improvement.

Additionally, in order to achieve the desired shape and size for the breast and preserve the existing nipple tissue, incisions around the nipple area may be required. After the selected breast tissues are removed, incisions are properly closed, and the final shape of the breast is provided. In some cases, additional surgical procedures may be necessary to reposition the nipple to a more aesthetically pleasing location. The goal after the operation is to achieve a symmetric size and shape between both breasts.

In men, the condition known as gynecomastia occurs when one or both breasts are larger than normal. This condition can result from hormonal imbalances or an increase in estrogen levels due to excessive weight. Breast reduction surgery is a suitable option for men with gynecomastia. However, the surgery should not be performed if the disproportional breast size is primarily due to excessive weight or obesity.

Several important factors should be considered before breast reduction surgery. First, a comprehensive general health check is essential to evaluate the patient’s suitability for surgery. Furthermore, diagnostic tests such as ultrasound and mammography should be performed to assess breast health. Avoiding harmful habits such as smoking is advisable to positively affect the recovery process. Postoperatively, you will typically need to stay in the hospital for about a day since general anesthesia is used. You can walk shortly after the surgery, and within two weeks, you can resume light tasks. You can start consuming liquid foods approximately 4 hours after the surgery. If you tolerate liquid foods well, you can have a light meal around 6 hours after the surgery. From the day after the surgery, you can eat anything.

Mild pain and swelling are normal during the first two weeks, and these can be managed with a simple pain reliever. Avoid lifting heavy objects during the early weeks, and be attentive to your surgeon’s recommendations. Typically, it takes around six weeks to return to your normal exercise routine. Also, it’s necessary to wear a special sports bra for the first 3 weeks.

As breast reduction surgery may involve various techniques and sizes, postoperative care requirements may vary from person to person. Your doctor will provide guidance on this matter. However, if you notice any unexpected symptoms postoperatively, such as slow wound healing, abnormal swelling, inflammation, or loss of sensation, it is crucial to consult your doctor promptly.

There is no specific age limit for breast reduction surgery. However, the breasts
should have finished developing before this operation.

Breast reduction surgery for aesthetic reasons does not cause cancer; on the contrary, research has shown that this surgery can reduce the risk of cancer by removing excess breast tissue.

Under proper techniques, breast reduction surgery should not result in breast regrowth. However, maintaining a stable weight is important to prevent potential increases in breast fat tissue.
