Gynecomastia is the enlargement of the breast tissue in males. Although the fundamental structure of male and female breasts is similar, men typically have smaller breasts due to lower levels of estrogen. However, an increase in estrogen levels in males can lead to gynecomastia. This condition can occur at different stages of life, including infancy, adolescence, and in older men. While gynecomastia can cause discomfort in some individuals, it generally doesn't pose a significant health risk. However, the condition can lead to feelings of embarrassment or self-consciousness, especially during physical activities like swimming or sports. For many men, gynecomastia can result in a lack of self-confidence, withdrawal, and posture issues. This condition can affect one or both breasts and rarely resolves on its own. Nowadays, gynecomastia is a treatable condition.
How is Gynecomastia Surgery Performed?
The surgery can be performed under sedation or general anesthesia. Sedative anesthesia is sufficient for liposuction, and patients can return home immediately after the surgery. However, in cases where a reduction of breast tissue is needed, general anesthesia is preferred.
In the initial stage, liposuction is applied to gynecomastia patients. If excessive breast tissue is still visible under the nipple after liposuction, a small incision is made just below the nipple to remove the excess tissue.
Gynecomastia Surgery Aftercare
Patients should avoid showering for the first 2 days after gynecomastia surgery. A compression garment should be worn for 3-4 weeks after the surgery. During the first 3 days following the procedure, it’s advisable to limit physical activity and get plenty of rest.

While there isn’t a specific age limit, gynecomastia that results from excessive breast development during adolescence can often resolve naturally. As such, gynecomastia surgery is typically considered for individuals aged around 18 or older.

Can Breasts Regrow After Gynecomastia Surgery?
After gynecomastia surgery, if a patient gains a significant amount of weight, there may be an increase in breast tissue. However, aside from this, the results of the surgery are generally permanent.
Is There Pain After Gynecomastia Surgery?
On the day of the surgery, the presence of long-lasting local anesthetics typically means there is no pain. Some very mild discomfort may occur in the following 1-2 days, which can be managed with pain relievers.
How Long Should a Corset Be Worn After Gynecomastia Surgery?
The duration of corset usage can vary based on the patient’s condition, ranging from 1 week to 1 month.
Does Gynecomastia Surgery Leave Scars?
When liposuction is used for gynecomastia surgery, the tiny incisions made with a cannula typically result in minimal, inconspicuous scars. If incisions are made under the nipple to directly remove tissue, there may be a possibility of scars; however, these are often well-concealed with aesthetic sutures.
When Can You Return to Work After Gynecomastia Surgery?
For individuals working in an office or similar setting, returning to work the day after the surgery is often possible. However, it is recommended to rest during the first 3 days post-surgery. After this period, the recovery process generally continues without complications.
